The Outdoor Activity Programme for 1998/99
(a) Outdoor Activities as part of the school curriculum.
In 1998/9 we intend to continue to provide all our pupils with a varied programme of Outdoor Education as part of their weekly curriculum. For pupils in Year 6 and older we will deliver one half day session of activities each week which will help to develop skills in mobility, spatial and body awareness, self-confidence and esteem, and also physical fitness and agility. In addition we will cover certain aspects of the National curriculum for Physical Education, and also subjects such as Science and Geography where there is an element of fieldwork involved. We will provide an awareness of leisure activities, skills in sports such as canoeing, sailing and rock-climbing, and an opportunity to take part in these activities at a variety of levels according to individual needs and abilities.
We also hope to promote a sense of adventure and a desire to gain new experiences, and thereby instil the confidence to step out into the world as young adults.
(b) Residential Experiences as curricular and as extra-curricular activities.
We believe that all pupils at Temple Bank should take part in at least one Residential experience each year. During these visits pupils are expected to develop skills for independent living and also social skills and the ability to co-operate with peers. Residentials can offer opportunities to learn some of the necessary skills and techniques needed for adult life, and we feel that these experiences offer our pupils the chance to explore new relationships and to learn about themselves and others in a unique setting. In 1998/9 we hope to offer the following Residential experiences:
1. Class Residentials - We intend to continue offering every pupil at Temple Bank the opportunity to take part in at least 1 residential experience. These will be based on class groupings and be varied according to ability and age. These will take place during the spring and summer terms 1999.
2. Multi Activity Weekend - As an introduction to our activities we would offer a weekend residential based at a local centre. This would enable us to meet and appraise young people who we would then offer places on a later week long activity residential. This would take place at the end of the spring term 1999.
3. Tall Ships Sailing - The Island Sailing Trust have offered us berths aboard their Sailing Ship ‘Provident’ for a 5 day cruise from Salcombe. This would be offered to visually impaired pupils in years 10 and 11 from a range of schools.
4. Cycling Expedition - ‘C2C’ Cycling part of the Coast to Coast Cycle route using tandems in conjunction with the GDBA during the early part of the summer term 1999.
5. Canoeing Expedition - 2 Lakes by Open Canoe. We plan to canoe two of the English Lakes camping on the way.
6. Music residential - In conjunction with the BBC Scottish Symphony Orchestra we hope to repeat the success of this year by working on a musical project in a residential setting, combining music and outdoor activities. This will take place in June 1999.
